You will receive a full day of street photography and photojournalism tuition with Emily Garthwaite in her home city of London. Enjoy a comprehensive day covering everything from shooting techniques to social media advice, philosophies and post-processing. 

Emily is offering 1 on 1 and group workshops in London. These workshops will entail a full day shooting in London as well as comprehensive discussions about her approach and shooting etiquette, and how you can implement these skills and philosophies in your own photography.

Leica Akademie India invites you for this unique opportunity to shoot in the streets of Kolkata with Emily Garthwaite, a London based photojournalist and Rohit Vohra. This is a great opportunity to learn from both the photographers who have their own distinct styles and ways of shooting. They will talk about various aspects of street photography and photojournalism. 

Each day will include shooting and theoretical session on all you need to know about street and documentary photography, dos and don’ts, ways to overcome the fear of getting close, detailed look into various composition aspects and the common mistakes while composing, understanding layering in photography, developing ones own style, understanding peripheral vision, ways to see and treat light.

The practical session will take place in the streets of Kolkata. The group will have a chance to turn their freshly acquired theoretical knowledge into the practice. The mentors will accompany students while shooting, observe them at work and give instant feedback and suggestions when required. Students will also have a chance to observe the mentors at work, learn their tricks and techniques.

A make shift classroom will help the participants share and select their top images for review and critiques.

There are no pre-requisites for attending this workshop. The workshop will be best suited for photographers who have some understanding of how to operate their camera, edit their photos, have some experience in photography and want to take their skills to the next level. However, inexperienced photographers are also welcome.

How many can people attend 1 on 1 workshops? 

Purchasing a place allows tuition for a maximum of two people. 

How long is a workshop?

A meeting point is arranged by Emily in London for 10am. A description of the outline of the day lasts until 10.30am. We finish at 6pm. There is a 30 minute break for lunch. 

Do I need to be an experienced photographer to join?

Photographers of all experience levels are welcome. 

What kind of cameras are accepted?

Emily encourages the use of every kind of device, from iPhones to Analog, digital DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Each have the potential to take a great image.

Can I purchase a workshop as a gift?

Yes, but please contact Emily to notify her of the name of the recipient.

Are workshops postponed for bad weather?

No. Emily plans two routes per workshop. One predominantly outdoors for good weather, another mainly indoors in the event of rain.

I am under 18 years old. Can I book a place on a 1 to 1 workshop? 

You may, but need to be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the day. If that adult wishes to take part in the workshop, they will need to purchase a place also. 

Can I bring a friend along?

Only paying participants are allowed to attend (unless under the age of 18 with an accompanying adult)

How physically demanding is a workshop?

We tend to walk around 5-7 miles over the course of the day. As the workshops are based in cities this isn't overly taxing.

Are lunches included?

Participants are asked to bring their own lunch with them or to purchase it during the designated lunch break. 



Terms and Conditions: One on One Workshops

Eligibility: A parent or guardian must accompany anyone under 18 for the entire journey.

Included in workshop price: Instruction by Emily Garthwaite

Not included in the workshop cost: Meals, drinks, and equipment.

Payment, cancellation and refunds: To book a place on a workshop, full payment is required upon registration. If you are no longer able or choose not to attend your chosen workshop, the following refund policy will apply.

More than 45 days prior to the beginning of the workshop: 100% refund less a £50 admin fee.

Less than 45 days prior to the workshop: No refund is given unless you find a replacement. The £50 admin will still apply. To confirm your reason for not attending, an email notification is required. Leaving a workshop that has begun, for any reason, will not result in a refund.

 In the event that a workshop is cancelled prior to the date stated, you will receive full refund of the cost of the workshop.

Responsibility: Emily Garthwaite will provide education, tips and advice during workshops. 

Emily Garthwaite shall not be held responsible for:

(1) any loss or damage due to cancellation, delay, or disruption in any manner caused by the laws, regulations, acts or failures to act, demands, orders of any government, or by acts of nature, including strikes, fire, flood, war, terrorism, sickness, theft, or any other cause(s) beyond their control.

(2) Any damage to, or loss of, property or injury to, or death of, persons occasioned directly or indirectly by an act or omission of any other provider. The participant waives any claim against Street Photography International for any such loss, damage, injury, or death.

Emily Garthwaite reserves the right in her sole discretion to accept, decline to accept, or remove any attendee on any photography workshop. Emily Garthwaite reserves the right, without penalty, to make changes in the itinerary whenever, in their judgement, conditions warrants, or if they deem it necessary for the comfort, convenience, or safety of participants.

You are personally responsible for being in sufficiently good health to undertake your chosen workshop.
